WAV & BWAV Technical Specification: Appendix
RIFF CHUNKS
Our policy is to support the use of additional metadata in RIFF chunks. Our systems should be capable of supporting or passing unchanged, any additional RIFF chunks present. The presence of additional chunks will not be a criteria for acceptance or rejection, however where present the data in the chunks must conform to the metadata guidelines published separately.
Currently only the following RIFF chunks are supported :
BEXT the only metadata so far defined is the Originator Reference (sometimes called USID) which corresponds to the MEDID in the VCS Dira system.
There is a schema developed for the Archive Preservation project and the Rachael system, but that is not currently supported beyond those systems.
VCSXML this is proprietary to the VCS Dira system, but since this is currently the central element of our broadcast systems, if other software can read & write to that format, then it is in effect supported.
CUE chunk this is a list of timing markers in the audio that can be referenced by other systems and will be supported by the Sadie/VCS interface.
The following chunks are partially usable:
CART some commercial digital editing software and portable recorders support the cart chunk.
LEVL though this is currently not supported, it is our intention to move towards supporting it as more commercial software implements the features it supports. When it is available we intend to use th is chunk to handle level & dynamic range info.
