Mixing desks selected for new BH studios

A Strong Mixer Field

Following a lengthy and complex evaluation of mixing desks BBC Radio & Music have selected the mixers for the GP Studios and Workshops currently being constructed in Broadcasting House. From a number of excellent desks on the market, the best from several strong contenders have been chosen for the new studios.

Workshops and Small GP Studios

The Small GP Studios and Workshops will have DHD mixers, similar to those previously selected for the W1 Transmission studios and Mailbox in Birmingham, extensively trialled in B16 BH and recently put into service in the new Radio 3 Continuity Suite in 1M, BH.

The desk was selected for its simple user interface and flexibility. Also important for these smaller areas was the fact that the various monitoring and fader panels are all self-contained units, allowing a very flexible approach to be taken in designing an ergonomic layout.

DHD RM4200 Mixers will be used in the following areas

  • Radio 2 studio, GP studio and workshops in Mailbox, Birmingham
  • 2 small GP Studios in BH
  • Radio 1 Studios Yalding House
  • Radio 2 Studios Western House
  • 6Music Studios Western House
  • Radio 3 "Con" and Pres Workshop BH
  • Radio 4 "Con", LW Con and Pres Workshop BH
  • BBC7 Workshops in BH

Medium and Large GP Studios
For the larger GP studios the Studer Vista 6 has been selected. This desk was chosen largely for its user interface, which manages to be extremely powerful and flexible but is also very easy to understand and use. This is a comparatively new product in the market place but uses the same core as the D950 recently installed in Maida Vale Studio 1 where it has been highly praised for its sound quality. A Vista 6 has recently been installed by Radio Resources in Manchester 4, where it has been used with great success for a wide variety of work from drama to Radio 1 sessions. The larger BH GP Studios will also each have a Studer "On Air 3000" desk for use by a second SM on the more complex shows where "through the wall" recording is required. This desk will replace the functionality currently offered by the familiar "Tape Control Panel" and will allow greater flexibility.

Studer Vista 6 / On Air 3000 desks will be installed in the following areas.

  • BH Medium GP, general factual production
  • BH Large GP "Mixer suite"
  • BH Super GP also capable of small drama production and some music work.

BBC Radio & Music are yet to select the desk for the Radio Theatre and a separate procurement exercise is also under way for Outside Broadcast Mobile Studios.
